Umrah and Hajj, both pilgrimages remain the most significant religious duties of the Islamic faith for Muslims. From all over the world, pilgrims travel with their hajj tickets 2022 and gather in the sacred city of Makkah to perform the necessary rituals of Umrah and Hajj. While both Hajj and Umrah are pilgrimages to Makkah and hold similar rewards for the pilgrims, there are some differences in their level of obligation, rituals as well as reward.
Here’s a brief description of the major differences between hajj and umrah pilgrimage.
Obligation.
Hajj remains the 5th yet the most significant pillar of the Islamic faith. It’s an obligation for every Muslim, who can afford it both financially and physically, to observe the necessary rituals of the hajj pilgrimage. That’s why hajj is also commonly known as the ‘Obligatory Pilgrimage’. A person who can afford hajj both financially as well as have the physical capability for its travel and rituals, hajj is obligatory for him/her at least once in the lifetime.
On the other hand, Umrah merely remains a sunnah of our Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW). It’s not an obligation for any Muslim to perform umrah rituals even if he/she possesses all the means for it. However, it’s advised to observe Umrah rituals because they hold great rewards. That’s why Umrah is often regarded as ‘Lesser or Minor Pilgrimage’ to Hajj.
When to perform?
Hajj is an annual Ibadah; it is only performed once a year during the 8th of Dhu-al-Hijjah to the 12th of Dhu-al-Hijjah i.e., the last month of an Islamic lunar year. Hajj rituals are offered by nearly 4 million pilgrims collectively who have gathered in the Haramain traveling from across the globe. While on the other hand, Umrah can be performed by a Muslim, individually, at any time of the year except for the days of hajj. Umrah season lasts thought the year since it’s a sunnah Ibadah.
Rituals.
All of Umrah rituals also remain a part of Hajj rituals, however not all of the Hajj rituals are part of Umrah rituals. In simple words, Umrah rituals majorly consist of;
• Assuming Ihram from Meeqat.
• Tawaf of Holy Kaabah.
• Sayee of al-Safah, and al-Marwah hills.
• Drinking Zamzam water.
• Halq/Taqsir (shaving/cutting hair of the head).
All of these rituals are also observed during the Hajj pilgrimage, but there are some additional rites to be as well. For instance;
• Spending time in the Mina region.
• Travelling to Muzdalifah.
• Wuqoof at Arafat.
• Stoning the Devil (Rami-al-Jamarat).
• Slaughtering an animal (Hady).
These are some of the basic yet most significant differences that lie between the obligatory pilgrimage of Hajj and the Sunnah pilgrimage of Umrah. Thus, one must be mindful of the necessary rituals to observe depending on the type of pilgrimage he/she is undertaking.
