The place I was born in is Mauritius. I was just three years old and with full leg braces suffering from polio at time that my father died following a long, grueling three-year stint in a wheelchair, afflicted by a severe stroke. My mother was beautiful. young lady who had to face the difficult task of bringing my older sisters and me. While living in Mauritius was difficult for me, there were nevertheless a time of joy. I have a memories of playing soccer with my teammates on the roads with gravel close to where we lived, and being chosen as the captain of the school three times over the course of a few seasons. In my capacity as captain I guided the team to a impressive win at the inter-school level and, of course the endless love and affection I received from my mother and sisters. At school, I was in one of the top five classes. Achievement in academics was a important goal in my country of origin since it was thought to be the most important factor to a better life for oneself as well as the family. I was always a diligent student and I was able to get there. I was always happy to see the smiles on the faces of my parents but not always the congratulation or the prize that the headmaster of the school presented me with. I was expected to be a diligent worker and succeed and surpass myself as my mother did for her children. In the chaos of everything happening around me, I was consciously assuming the role of my father. I was now expected to complete every task my father would have performed should the time have come for him to have a chance to live.

I was always inventive and entrepreneurial in my job in building or fixing anything. At the age of nine , I constructed slingshots from elastic bands my mother had created with her sewing machine. I also built small sailing vessels constructed from dust pans with long handles constructed from old oil containers, and provided them to local shopkeepers as well as my schoolmates in exchange for just a handful of dollars.
